Pro-Russian protesters storm new police station in east Ukraine

About 100 pro-Russian protesters armed with bats and rocks stormed a police station in the east Ukrainian town of Gorlivka on Monday, smashing its windows and grabbing metal shields from police.

A pro-Russia militiaman holding a club raises his shield as he greets people after storming the regional police building in the eastern Ukrainian city of Horlivka (Gorlovka), near Donetsk, on April 14, 2014

An AFP correspondent in the Donetsk region town of nearly 300,000 people said the local police force, which put up almost no resistance to the attack, later swore allegiance to a pro-Russian commander who took charge.
