Aide: Prem aware of call to step in

Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, Privy Council president and statesman, is aware of the call by a group of retired soldiers and state officials to step in and help defuse the political crisis, his close aide Lt Gen Pissanu Putthawong said on Tuesday.

But Lt Gen Pissanu, chief of the office of the Statesman's Foundation, said he did not know whether Gen Prem would accept the request.

The group, which calls itself Men of State and led by former supreme commander Gen Saiyud Kerdphol, wants Gen Prem to act as the middle man to work under His Majesty the King in finding ways to end the country's turmoil.

Prior to the group’s plea, Gen Pissanu revealed that Gen Prem had received suggestions on how to address the protracted political problems from several groups in various sectors.

“The country has lost opportunities because of the political turmoil which has been going on for more than 10 years.

“All of the proposed solutions should be combined and considered. They could help break the impasse or at least prevent the situation from worsening because everyone in the country wants it [political conflict] to end,” Gen Pissanu said.
