ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Welcome to Guru’s Gate Crasher, your ultimate guide to finding something fresh to do in this big city.

ART OPENING

It seems that everyone has partied themselves out over Songkran, promoters included. And what better way was there to wash the political tensions aside than the world’s biggest water fight? Pistols aside, it also seems that the city is starting to muster some momentum again for events after a pretty quiet start to the year. Let’s hope things continue in this regard. Tonight (Apr 18) sees the opening of Fresh Photo Japan at Goja Gallery Cafe (Sukhumvit Soi 71, fb.com/gojaphrakanong). Presented by Einstein Studio, the show comes in the form of a “Pop-Up Shop”, working like a showcase of young and talented photographers of Japan. It has been put on before, but this time round will feature special packages “Wonder Boxes” and “Art Magazines”, purchasable exclusively at the site. Art will be up until May 4 if you can’t make it tonight. Entry is a big fat “free”, from around 7pm (with a few freebie beers in the mix for the super stealthy).

PARTY

Another crew braving the post-Songkran slump are the Canucks down at (relative) newcomer to the scene Sway (Arena 10, Thong Lor Soi 10, fb.com/swaybkk). Dotted between some pretty well-attended Beervana events, this one is called Retraflex and is billed as an evening of drum & bass. It’s on tonight (Apr 18) with an 11:30pm start. It’s presented by new label Flexout Audio who are getting things off the ground. The more music in this city, the better, we say. Entry is free, with a late finish, they’re promising.

DJS

Another regular stalwart on the local party circuit we’ve all been to at some stage is Glow (Sukhumvit Soi 23, fb.com/glowbkk). What it lacks in ostentatiousness it makes up for in familiarity. After hosting a pretty epic after-party for Kolour Sundays recently, they are at it again on Sat (Apr 19) with the return of TH4i that celebrates locally bred DJ talents. This third instalment will see Montonn Jira return to the decks after a brief-ish hiatus. Support will come from regulars Wintix, Oum and Krit. Entry is B300, from 11pm-4am, with a free drink. Go see what Mr Samutprakarn (Montonn) has been up to.

DANCING

For something a little different (and something to impress the opposite sex with), there have been a number of pretty regular dance evenings going on around the city, from swing to ballroom and salsa. Flava Lounge (Dream Hotel, 10 Sukhumvit Soi 15, fb.com/Dreambkk) are still hosting two Tango nights each week from 7pm — Sun (Apr 20) and Wed (Apr 23) this week. Entry is B350, with a drink and some nibbles. And they put on a beginner’s class starting from 6:30pm for the nubies, so there’s no need to be shy. Go learn how to shake it. G
