A treat for soldiers

Col Mettrai Santiveshkul, deputy commander of the Royal Thai Army's ranger unit, visited his sub-ordinates stationed on Budo Mountains, Bachau district, Narathiwat province, on Tuesday.

Around 100 rangers have been on watch there for more than six months. With only solar-cell panels to generate electricity, they have been living in a hot, harsh environment.

The commander brought along ice cream as a treat for them. The rangers, who have not tasted anything but canned food, said they missed ice cream.

They were also happy to drink cold water from the ice brought along with the ice cream.

Budo Mountains are believed to be a base of the RKK insurgents and four ranger units are deployed right in the middle of the insurgents' stronghold.
