M79 rounds land on NSPRT rally site

Two rounds of M79 grenades were fired at the rally site of the Network of Students and People for the Reform of Thailand (NSPRT) by Government House on Phitsanulok road near Chamai Maruchet bridge in Phra Nakhon district on Saturday night, wounding two people, reports said.

The first M79 grenade landed behind the NSPRT stage at about 10.30pm.  A man, Narongchai Leesirirungroj, 52, was hurt by shrapnel in the mouth, and a woman, Mrs Issarawan Srikhlai, 55, was wounded in the neck.  They received first aid treatment at an NSPRT medical unit.

The second round of M79 grenade landed in front of Ratchawinit School.  Nobody was hurt.  However, the blast shattered three glass public telephone booths and damaged three cars - a Toyota Camry, a Mitsubishi Mirage and a Toyata Yaris - of NSPRT protesters.

The authorities reportedly examined the scene at 9am on Sunday.

The incident reportedly occurred while People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban was holding a meeting near the NSPRT stage.  Mr Suthep was not hurt.
