DSI awaits PDRC surrender

The head of the Department of Special Invstigation (DSI) claims that anti-government protest leaders facing arrest warrants will turn themselves in next week.

Many of the key figures of the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) including leader Suthep Thaugsuban are already in military custody following Thursday's coup.

They, along with politicians from both the ousted government and the opposition, are expected to be released within a few days. In the meantime, the military has said, they would have "time to think" about the political mess both sides had created.

DSI director-general Tarit Pengdith said Mr Suthep had told him that PDRC leaders would gradually start to surrender to the DSI next week. They might be asked to show up at the Office of the Attorney General so that the DSI could press charges with public prosecutors right away.

The ousted government of former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra had charged the leaders of the PDRC with many offences including insurrection for their anti-government protests.

Before the May 22 coup, the PDRC had staged demonstrations in Bangkok and other provinces for about six months to call for the resignation of the Yingluck administration and national reform before the next election.

The Criminal Court has issued warrants for the arrest of 30 PDRC leaders. They include Sathit Wongnongtoey, Chumpol Jullasai, Phutthiphong Punnakun, Issara Somchai, Witthaya Kaewparadai, Thaworn Senneam, Nattapol Teepsuwan, Akanat Promphan, Nitithorn Lamlua, Uthai Yodmanee, Gen Preecha Iamsupan, Yossak Kosaikanont, Thanom Onketpol, and Phra Suvit Thongprasert (Buddha Isara).
