Lottery chief resigns, new schemes likely

Pol Maj Gen Attagrit Tharechat, director-general of the Government Lottery Office, tendered his resignation to allow the junta to select a new chief, says GLO chairman Rakop Srisupaat.

Gen Attagrit submitted his letter this week, claiming health reasons, said Mr Rakop, who is also director-general of the Customs Department. Mr Rakop added that the change in politics might have been another reason for the resignation.

The resignation will be forwarded to the GLO board for approval, with a meeting to discuss the issue in two weeks.

Gen Attagrit is a former head of ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's security team. Thaksin's youngest sister Yingluck appointed him to replace Somchart Wongwatanasan, who was sacked after only four months in office.

Gen Attagrit's replacement is expected to push through the long-awaited two- and three-digit lottery or perhaps the online lottery project.
