Democrat backs reform timetable

The one-year timeframe for national reform announced by the coup-makers is not too long, says Nipit Intarasombat, the deputy leader of the Democrat Party.

He said he had not discussed the matter with other Democrats but he thought the plan and timetable outlined for a national reform council was acceptable.

He urged all parties involved to cooperate with the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) so that the country could resume democracy soon. Further protests, he said, could only delay the reform process.

Coup leader Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, in a televised address on Friday night, said it would take about 15 months before an election could be held.

For the next 2-3 months, he said, the focus would be on national reconciliation. After that, an interim government would be set up, with a national assembly to appoint a prime minister and administer the state budget for the next fiscal year starting from Oct 1.

In parallel with the formation of a government, legal experts would draft an interim constitution and a reform council would deal with other issues, including electoral laws. That process is expected to take about a year.

Only after that, said Gen Prayuth, could free and fair elections be held under terms that all sides could accept.

Mr Nipit said the Democrat Party had tried in vain to promote plans similar to those that Gen Prayuth announced.

He referred to corruption suppression, the elimination of abuses of authority and unfair exercise of power, and attempts to educate people about their political rights and responsibilities.

He said the party would let the NCPO try to carry out its reforms, but it would reserve its right to warn the NCPO not to go beyond what Gen Prayuth has announced.

Mr Nipit also said that most people supported the present actions of the NCPO, especially suppression of illegally obtained war weapons, something that the civilian government had done little to tackle.
