Thai women receive extra funding

The Football Association of Thailand plans to give the national women's side 30 million baht in their preparations for this year's Asian Games and next year's World Cup.

Worawi Makudi

FAT president Worawi Makudi yesterday handed 10 million baht to the national women's team as a bonus for qualifying for the 2015 Women's World Cup.

They are the first Thai national team, men or women, to secure a World Cup berth.

"This is a huge success for Thai football as we will play in the Women's World Cup and the FAT will celebrate its 100th anniversary next year," he said.

He said the FAT would use around 30 million baht for the women's team to prepare for this year's Asian Games and next year's World Cup.

Worawi plans to send the team to train and play warm-up matches in Japan ahead of the Asian Games to be held in Incheon, South Korea from Sept 19-Oct 4.

As for the 2015 Women's World Cup to be held in Canada, the squad will train in Germany for three weeks, according to Worawi.

"We have qualified for the World Cup and we hope to reach the second round at the finals," he said.

Thailand lost 7-0 to China and 4-0 to South Korea at the Women's Asian Cup in Ho Chi Minh City last month.

The Thais defeated Myanmar in their final group game and then beat Vietnam 2-1 in the fifth-placed play-off to secure a World Cup spot.
