Drug suspect held, B200m frozen

A combined force of about 100 drug suppression officials on Sunday raided a house in Mae Sot district of Tak province, arrested a woman and froze assets believed to be drug related worth more than 200 million baht.

The raid was led by Pol Gen Pongsapat Pongcharoen, secretary-general of the Office of the Narcotics Control Board, Col Therdsak Ngamsanong, chief of the Mae Sot-based task force unit of the 4th Infantry Regiment, and provincial and border patrol police officers.

The unit laid siege to the house of Manee Khampeera, 52, at Ban Mae Tao in tambon Mae Tao of Mae Sot district.

Under a warrant issued by the ONCB, Mrs Manee, owner of Nakhon Manee 786 Co, was arrested. Her assets worth altogether about 2.4 billion baht, including the house, land, vehicles and cash deposits in 70 bank accounts were seized and frozen.

Mrs Manee is on record as having transferred about 2.4 billion baht a year to run a drug network together with six Myanmar nationals for whom arrest warrants have also been issued. Authorities allege the money was acquired through the cross-border methamphetamine trade.

Pol Gen Pongsapat said Mrs Manee had provided accommodation and vehicles for the Myanmar nationals while they were in Thailand for the drug operation.
