Tablet project scrapped

Tablet project scrapped

A meeting led by a deputy chief of the National Council for Peace and Order resolved on Monday to scrap the plan to buy tablets for school children, effective in October.

It cancelled a pending purchase of tablets for all Mathayom 1 (Grade 1) students in the North and Northeast, but will allow the purchase of tablets for students in the Central region to be completed.

Led by Adm Narong Pipattanasai, the meeting concluded students did not need to have tablets of their own since they used them only 1-2 hours a day.

The devices are not suitable as a learning tool all the time, and students should learn from teachers, he said.

Moreover, the tablets should be considered as schools' assets, and never given to children.

The admiral said that because of their small screens, tablets will cause eye problems for children in the long term.

As a low-priced unit, the tablet has a short life of three years, making repairs not cost-effective.

The 6.97 billion baht saved from scrapping the project will be used to support education in other ways, which will be studied.

Ten agencies were asked to think of new projects which could benefit children more.
