Motorcyclist run over by truck at red light

An overloaded 10-wheel truck failed to stop at a red light and ploughed into a motorcyclist, killing him, at a T-junction in Pathum Thani’s Munag district on Tuesday.

The accident occurred at an intersection near the office of the Pathum Thani provincial administration organisation about 12.30pm.

A witness, Thantita Charanjeerapong, 38, said she was stopped in her car in the right-hand lane at the junction when she heard a distant honking and the sound of an approaching 10-wheeler coming from behind. There were three motorcycles stopped and waiting for a green light in theleft lane at that time.

“I knew right away that the truck driver could not stop in time,” Ms Thantita said.

Two motorcyclists abandoned their machines on the road and fled to safety just before the truck crashed into them, and it then ran over the third motorcycle and its rider, who had not fled in time. The motorcyclist  was killed on the spot, the witness said.

The dead man was identified later as Panya Pangkaew, 34. After the fatal crash, the truck driver left his vehicle and fled the scene.

Pol Lt Prinya Sriruang, a duty officer at Muang police station, said the Pathum Thani-registered  truck was loaded with soil and was well above the legal load limit, which was probably why the speeding driver could not stop.
