The drugs, valued at more than 8.8 billion baht, were seized as proceeds from 2,911 cases. The FDA burns drugs gathered by the agencies every year.

This year, drugs to be burned include 2.5 tonnes of amphetamine, 243 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, 21kg of heroin, two kilos of ecstasy pills and 74kg of opium, said deputy health permanent secretary Songyot Chaichana.

The Royal Thai Police’s Narcotics Suppression Bureau will join operations to burn an additional half a tonne of seized marijuana.

The drugs will be incinerated at Bangpa-in Industrial Estate’s centre for public utility and environment management in Ayutthaya province.

Thursday also marks International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
