Trang locals free stranded whale

A one-tonne Cuvier's beaked whale beached itself on the shore of Libong island off the coast of Trang province on Sunday morning. It managed to return to open waters with the help of local fishermen and villagers.

Prachuap Mokarat, director of the Marine and Coastal Resources Conservation Centre 6, said the six-metre whale was spotted by a group of fishermen who tried to push it back into deep water. The whale appeared weak and had minor wounds on its body.

A team of rescuers from the centre later came to the rescue. They fed and gave medicine to the whale before it was able to return to the sea, much to the delight of whale watching tourists and villagers.

Mr Prachuap said coastal personnel will keep an eye on the beach to prevent whales from becoming stranded in the future.
