La Mer's first beauty boutique opens with a mini spa

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

After mingling with other cosmetic brands in a department store setting, La Mer has opened its first beauty boutique where customers can obtain skincare consultation and products, and unwind in one of the two treatment rooms.

The Miracle Broth Facial promotes fresher and firmer-looking skin, while providing deep relaxation.

Located at Groove@CentralWorld, the beauty boutique also operates like a mini spa with face and body pampering designed to optimise beauty benefits of skincare products, the most famous being the cult Crème de La Mer. Treatments range from the 20 minutes Eye on Youth (2,000 baht) to the 75 minute Miracle Broth Facial (8,500 baht). Much has been said about the Miracle Broth as La Mer’s signature ingredient, which now comes in its pure form for the pricey wrinkle-fighting facial.

The beauty broth was developed by aerospace physicist Dr Max Huber, who firstly used it to heal his scarred face from a laboratory accident. The personal quest took him out to sea, where he uncovered kelp’s skin-rejuvenating properties via a biofermentation process.

Besides skincare products, magnetic tools are involved in La Mer’s facials.

The fermentation of sustainably-harvested sea kelp and other ingredients requires three to four months, upon which the seaweed finds itself in an environment mimicking underwater light and sound that would optimally bring out its energy and skincare properties.

As the brand name and story references the sea, one might expect a marine-inspired spa concept and treatment room. Instead a minimalist interior design sets the ambience for deep relaxation. However, from a list of Sea Symphonies, you can pick the music that transports you to an oceanic destination, while indulging in the Miracle Broth Facial.

Relaxation is induced by the rosewater-scented mist spritzed on the face and a light rocking body massage that evokes seawaves.

Once the body is relaxed and ready for the facial, La Mer’s caring aesthetician gives you the routine cleansing, exfoliating and toning in order to prime the skin for receiving the Miracle Broth.

This step involves a brush to apply the pure broth, using wave movements and acupressure techniques designed to promote circulation and enhance the absorption of active ingredients.

The aesthetician then focuses on the eye zone, giving it a gentle massage with an applicator to smoothly work in the rich eye cream. Masking the entire face with a thick layer of Crème de La Mer takes 10 minutes, when you may fall asleep until the aesthetician performs a hand and arm massage involving the rolling of a magnet on your palms.

The magnet may seem like a gimmick but an invisible magnetic field is believed to have an effect on the body, with this magnetic hand massage as a stimulating re-energiser. To finish off the masking, the rich cream is massaged into the skin, using sculpting, firming, as well as draining techniques. The facial then rounds off with sound therapy as the aesthetician uses a tuning fork to strike certain chords that help rebalance the body.

The two-pronged metal tool is normally used to check whether a musical instrument is in tune. In La Mer’s treatment room, you wake up with a refreshed complexion and a body presumably in tune to better encounter a busy life.
