NCPO frees Same Sky editor

Thanapol Eawsakul, the editor and publisher of the controversial Fa Diew Kan (Same Sky) magazine, has been released by the military after he was rearrested for allegedly breaking the conditions for his initial release.

Lt Col Burin Thongprapai, a Judge Advocate General's Department officer, who was in charge of the arrest, said he had asked the Crime Suppression Division to release Mr Thanapol after he had pledged not to again violate the conditions for his release.

Authorities also had held renewed "attitude adjustment" talks with him, Lt Col Burin said.

Mr Thanapol was taken back into custody on Saturday after he had posted a message on his Facebook page that the NCPO claimed violated a condition for his release. He was released Wednesday, two days earlier than the normal seven-day detention period allowed under martial law.

Mr Thanapol was earlier arrested in connection with an anti-coup protest in front of the Bangkok Arts and Culture Gallery on May 23. He was one of many summoned to report to the NCPO under Order No 5.

After reporting to the NCPO, he was detained for seven days and released on the condition that he must not travel abroad or conduct political activities in a way that could spur conflict in society.
