Gudni Emilsson will lead the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra in an exciting concert of American classics tomorrow and on Saturday.

Dimitri Ashkenazy.

The “West Side Story” concert will see the return of Russian-Icelandic clarinet soloist Dimitri Ashkenazy, who has been heralded as a captivating artist whose performances should not be missed.
This time around he will be playing Aaron Copland’s Concerto For Clarinet And Orchestra. The piece, originally written 1949 for jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, mixes elements of classical and jazz music.

The concerto is in two movements.
The first section is a sweet flowing melody and the second is all about jazz. The two movements are connected by a flashy cadenza for the soloist.

The concert will feature three pieces from iconic American composer Leonard Bernstein. All are selections from his most famous musicals, Candide, On The Town and West Side Story.

The overture to Candide is a lively piece that will make the audience want to get up and dance. On The Town and West Side Story are short synopses of the original musical. All have the perfect mix of classic, jazz, pop and American music. There is even an appearance by the beloved saxophone in the orchestra.

The concert will be held in the Music Auditorium of Mahidol University’s College of Music, Salaya campus, on July 11
at 7pm and on July 12 at 4pm.

Both shows are preceded by a talk.
