Beauty queens want death for rapists

Several Thai beauty queens demanded the junta impose death sentences on rapists following the rape and murder of a 13-year-old girl on a southern train Sunday.

Miss Grand Thailand 2014 Parapadsorn Ditdamrong, Miss Earth Thailand 2014 Sasi Sintawee, Miss Supranational Thailand 2014 Ananya Mongkolthai, Miss Intercontinental Thailand 2014 Patraporn Wang and Miss Tourism Thailand 2014 Warangkanang Wutthayakorn submitted a letter addressed to Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, head of the National Council for Peace and Order, asking the NCPO to impose quick death penalties on rapists in order to reduce all forms of sexual abuse.

Beauty pageant organiser Nawat Itsaragrisil said the contest winners couldn't stand to see wrongdoers enjoy light sentences and remain free in society. While rape convictions can carry the death penalty, many rape laws are not enforced in Thailand.

The delegation also called for better security measures and self-defence training for women.
