Husbandry grads in high demand

Animal husbandry graduates are in exceptionally high demand at present as supply has failed to keep up with the local livestock industry's expansion.

The demand, however, is limited to the graduates of leading universities, who have been courted since freshman year with lucrative salary, benefit and career-path offers, said Kriengsak Sereeratyuenyong, chairman of the Southern Pig Raisers' Association.

"Those majoring in this field have been contracted by cattle companies, which will keep track of their grades, as well as moral and ethical attitudes," he said.

Animal husbandry is the management and care of farm animals for profit, in which genetic qualities and behaviour, considered to be advantageous to humans, are further developed.

Among the universities producing the graduates in this field are Kasetsart and Chulalongkorn universities. However, the numbers are limited to a few hundred each year.

They can manage livestock farms — from pigs, cows and goats to chicken — and integrate processes.
