130,000 motorcycle taxis register

Nearly 130,000 motorcycle taxis have been registration with the Department of Land Transport since the National Council for Peace and Order began its reorganization of Bangkok public transport.

Maj Gen Apirat Kongsompong, commander of the 1st Division, said Thursday that the motorcyclists sought registration for full-time work from the department and will receive their free orange vests soon.

He said that the department was producing newly designed vests for the registered drivers. The jackets will have pockets that hold identification cards issued by the department.

"I insist that new jackets are free. Motorcyclist taxi drivers pay only up to 1,000 baht for their registration," Maj Gen Apirat said. He does not think those who will get the new vests can sell them because the registration for the motorcycle taxi services is liberal.

Maj Gen Apirat also said that he was satisfied with motorcycle-taxi services for now because the drivers sought registration and followed traffic rules and police were helping regulate them.
