NCPO orders delay of 4G auction

The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has ordered a one year delay in the auction for licences for the fourth-generation (4G) mobile phone spectrum planned by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).

The postponement was announced late Friday morning.

During the 12-month period the telecom regulator has to temporarily protect consumers and ensure a continuous service if the spectrum licences expire.

The NBTC is required to amend its regulations to ensure that the auction is transparent, fair and examinable, result in the efficient operation of related agencies and be in line with the government’s budget, based on both national security and public benefits.
