Woolworths eyes Thai sourcing hub

Australia’s Woolworths Ltd is giving a long look to Thailand as it scans the Asia-Pacific region for a new sourcing hub.

Nuntawan Sakuntanaga, director-general of the Department of International Trade Promotion, said Tuesday that her organisation has arranged business meetings between Woolworths executives and the management of about 60 Thai companies as that country's top retailer plans to open a sourcing office in the region.

Mrs Nuntawan said Thailand is getting special consideration, which can be a good opportunity for the nation to expand its exports.

About 80% of the Thai operators in the talks were in seafood, vegetable and fruit industries with the rest were in furniture, home decor, electronics, toys, health and beauty products and clothing, she said.

Mrs Nuntawan also said that Woolworths had about 3,000 branches in Australia and New Zealand.
