Wanted - urgently - new THAI president

Thai Airways International (THAI) will extend the search for a new president after only two candidates showed interest in the post.

The deadline for applicants for THAI president ended on July 23 with only two people — both outsiders — interesting in competing for the post, permanent secretary for finance Rangsan Sriworasart said on Wednesday.

Mr Rangsan, who chairs the screening committee, said the panel will propose a longer quest for the new president to the THAI board members in their meeting on Aug 14.

The committee hopes to have five or six candidates vying for the post instead of only two to give them more choices to consider, the official added.

The board earlier expected the struggling airline to have a new chief by September, but Mr Rangsan admitted that the timeline could be delayed.

ACM Siwakiat Chayema has been the acting president since July 1 after the board approved the resignation of Chokchai Panyayong on June 20.

One of the qualifications for the new president is to turn around the airline and make it competitive, Mr Rangsan said.
