Police have arrested on campus a Khon Kaen University student who took part in a political stage play of which content was viewed as lese majeste.

Pol Lt Col Somyot Udomraksasap, a deputy chief of the Chana Songkram police station, on Thursday took into custody Patiwat Saraiyam, a 23-year-old student under the June 6 arrest warrant.

On Friday morning, he submitted a bail request with the Criminal Court.

The suspect took a role in a political stage play called The Wolf Bride held by the Iskra or Prakai Fai group to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Oct 14, 1973 uprising at Thammasat University on Oct 6 and 13, 2013.

The content of the play is viewed as lese majeste by the police.

Mr Patiwat admitted he took part in the play but denied the allegation.

In early June, the junta summoned and detained about 10 current and former Prakai Fai members and interrogated them about the play.

Mr Patiwat is now in his fifth year at the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts. He is also the secretary general of the Student Federation of the Northeast.

Under Section 112 of the Penal Code, anyone who defames, insults or threatens the king, queen, the heir-apparent or the regent, shall be punished with imprisonment of three to 15 years.
