Students from Mahidol University’s College of Music are to stage a short run of Clown: The Musical, an original adaptation of Victor Hugo’s 1869 French-language novel L’Homme Qui Rit (The Man Who Laughs), at the college’s music auditorium. It will open on Aug 27 and run until Aug 30.

The musical is sure to thrill local audiences with the heartbreaking, yet uplifting story of Gwynplaine, a young man disfigured at an early age, resulting in a face that seems to bear a permanent smile, rather like the stereotypical image of a court jester.

Gwynplaine makes the most of his misfortune by getting work in a circus, entertaining audiences as a clown. The social backdrop to the drama is an unspecific time period where power and money are all-important. Gwynplaine will face a choice between power and money or love; which will he choose?

Through the use of popular music and a powerful story encompassing love, hope and tragedy, the truth about the man behind the smile is revealed.
