Prayuth unanimously voted PM

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) on Thursday voted 191-0 with three abstentions to approve the nomination of Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha, chairman of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO), for the post of prime minister.

Altogether 194 of the existing 197 NLA members signed in to attend today's meeting to vote on the prime minister.

The meeting, chaired by NLA president Pornpetch Wichilcholachai, began about 10am at the parliament.

After the chairman explained the procedures, Tuang Intachai, an NLA member, nominated Gen Prayuth for the prime minister's post. The nomination was seconded by 188 members, far more than the required one-fifth of the 197 currently sitting on the NLA.

NLA members subsequently voted in a roll-call.

Of the 194 members present, 191 voted to approve the nomination without opposition. The three abstentions were the NLA president and the two vice-presidents.

Mr Pornpetch adjourned the meeting after announcing the result of the vote.

According an agreement reached by the NLA affairs committee, the NLA is to hold a meeting every Thursday and Friday.

The next meetings have been scheduled for Aug 28 and 29.

Before the meeting, Mr Pornpetch told reporters the NLA would today forward the result of today's meeting to His Majesty the King for further endorsement.
