Girl pregnant after 5th serial rape

UTTARADIT – A 16-year-old girl claimed she had been raped repeatedly by five men since she was 12, with the latest attack leaving her pregnant.

A grandmother who raised her since her parents died took the pregnant girl to seek assistance from the provincial deputy governor, Khao Sod reported. They live in tambon Ruamchit of Tha Pla district.  Names were withheld.

According to deputy governor Somchai Kamolthepthewin, the girl said that, in the past four years, she was raped by her stepfather, then by a step-uncle, then by two elderly neighbours, and finally, this year, by a younger male neighbour. The first four men took turns raping her, sometimes more than one at a time. Each man gave her 200 baht each time, she said.

The girl said she did not tell her grandmother because the men threatened to hurt or kill her.

The younger man was the last rapist, attacking her in the middle of this year, she said. Afterward, he entered the monkhood. He was later discharged in disgrace after he was found using drugs.

The girl said she suffered severe stomach aches, so a neighbour took her to hospital, where she discovered she was two-months pregnant. The girl said she was sure the defrocked monk was the father.

The grandmother said she had not known about the rapes until Sunday night, when a local official came to her house and tried to convince her to allow the girl to have an abortion because the incident had damaged the tambon's image.

The grandmother felt that was not right so she took the girl to the governor's office.

Deputy governor Somchai said he assured the grandmother that the case would be fairly prosecuted and the girl would get good care at a shelter.
