1 dead in Mae Hong Son flooding

One man is dead and another is missing after flash floods hit parts of Mae Hong Son province early Wednesday.

Storm runoff from the mountain caused flooding in two tambons of Muang district. Permvittaya Kantasong, chief of disaster prevention and mitigation in Mae Hong Son, said soldiers and rescue teams went to inspect flooded Pang Mu tambon where four people were reported missing.

Rescuers assisted two men and found the body of a third resident identified only as "Dae".

Prachak Pitwai, the Moo 4 village headman, said the runoff into the Soi River, located next to the village, destroyed a small hut on the river bank where the four men were sleeping. They are immigrant labourers hired to work in the rice fields.

About 1,500 rai of farm land was damaged by the flood.

Early morning heavy rain caused a flash flood in four villages of tambon Mae Wa in Thuen district of Lampang province. About 100 houses were hit by the flood which rose to between 30cm and one metre.

Muang district in Nakhon Pathom province also was hit by low-level flooding of about 30cm after the heavy rain. The province later in the day was able to drain the water from most places.
