Udon Thani police chief transferred

Pol Gen Somyot Pumpanmuang, the national police chief, has signed an order transferring two Udon Thani-based high-level police officers to work at the Royal Thai Police Office's operations centre, reports said.

They are Pol Maj Gen Chaiyat Saithin, the Udon Thani police superintendent, and Pol Maj Gen Boonlue Korbangyang, commander of a special training division of the Border Patrol Police Bureau.

Under the order signed by Pol Gen Somyot on March 23, the two officers are to report to the RTPO's operations centre by 12pm on Tuesday.

Sources said the abrupt transfer of the two police officers might be related to the murder of Phra Bandhit Supanthito, the abbot of Wat Pa Tor Si Siat in Udon Thani's Muang district.

Phra Bandhit was shot to death in a gun attack while returning to the temple after the morning alms taking round on March 1. The monk was formerly a doctor and former director of several local hospitals. The last place he served before entering monkhood was Chaiwan Hospital in Udon Thani.

He was a close disciple of the late Luangta Maha Bua, a revered abbot of Wat Pa Ban Tad in Udon Thani.

The investigation into the monk's murder is still in progress.
