Croissant cloud nine

Croissant cloud nine

Fresh from the oven, these Parisian pastries are worth the drive to Sathu Pradit

SOCIAL & LIFESTYLE

Yes, I'm a pastry addict, and there's no shame in admitting that I rather quite enjoy stuffing my face with three different types of croissants and calling it a relatively healthy breakfast.

In recent years, Bangkok has been basking in the flourishing scene of bakeries -- finally, we are able to venture beyond the Farmhouse brand. Artisanal breads have taken off, Maison Jean Philippe and Conkey's Bakery became a familiar name, and internationally renowned Paul and Maison Eric Kayser became the latest additions to the city's growing taste for French pastries.

I stumbled upon Maison Chatenate by pure accident. Or you can call it trolling on Facebook. Either way, this serendipitous online encounter led me to Sathu Pradit, where the small two-week old bakery is located.

The smell of butter and croissants in the oven ushered me through the door, where I found a table laden with freshly baked viennoiserie.

All items were bite-sized, which made it perfect as a quick brekkie. The highlights for me were the Pigs in a blanket (B30) and the Mini almond croissants (B40). The consistency was perfect with every bite and the quality of ingredients really came through -- chef Albert Chatenate is not one to skimp on French flour and butter. Perfect for snacking, the Chouquettes (B10) are also to die for -- they're crunchy on the outside, soft like choux on the inside, and just buttery and sweet enough to be seriously addictive.

After living in France for more than 40 years, working at prestigious pastry institutions such as Lenôtre and the Royal Monceau, and collecting numerous accolades, this Laos-born pastry extraordinaire has brought his expertise and morsels of delight to our beloved city. Although there is no seating area nor coffee served, I, for one, am making this my new go-to patisserie.

Maison Chatenet is located at Le Rich Condominium, Sathu Pradit Soi 41. It opens Tue-Sat, from 8am-5pm, and Sun, from 8am-1pm. Cash only. Pastries tend to sell out early, so check availability beforehand. Call 092-408-0308.
