City must learn to deal with disasters

Bangkok lacks clear emergency scheme

Bangkok is familiar with disasters but as their severity increases, the city's ability to deal with them diminishes, says an expert. 

"I think it is more difficult for us to bounce back as the issues are getting much more complicated and beyond what we can do," said Apiwat Ratanawaraha, an assistant professor at Chulalongkorn University's department of urban and regional planning.

The 2011 flood that hit Bangkok and many provinces, including nearby Pathum Thani and Ayutthaya, inundated seven industrial estates for months.
