What
the critics say
|

| BHICHIT: Anuchart Puangsumlee, Mahidol University lecturer: "The city administration works in a capricious manner. There's no follow-up or sustainability. Mr Bhichit also has spoiled Bangkok people by trying to solve every problem for them." An Interior ministry officer: "The governor has a tendency to rush things through without regard for the established rules for transparency.'' Kanjana Spindler, Bangkok Post columnist: "His cleaner and greener approach is largely cosmetic and some of his ideas seem to lack any foundation in scientific fact.'' A city official: "He doesn't understand bureaucracy and how to interact with city officials. He makes city officials and employees feel tense and threatened, as if he's finding fault with them.'' SAMAK: Pibhop Dhongchai, secretary-general of the Campaign for Popular Democracy: "Having Mr Samak as the city governor will affect the people's movement because he's made it quite clear that he does not support the people's movement although he will not intervene. However, activists do not expect good co-operation from him like they received from the Bhichit Rattakul administration.'' Chaiwat Thirapantu, of the Bangkok Forum: "Mr Samak appears keen to build a monument for himself by means of initiating large-scale projects. He is going to manage the city in a very conventional way by solving problems that come to hand without calculating future repercussions.'' Khwansuang Atipho, a Chulalongkorn University architecture lecturer: "Mr Samak's platform is not favourable for running Bangkok. His grand-scheme thinking is contrary to what the city needs, which is a small but effective approach to deal with the diverse problems.'' |
