Eli Manning receives the Vince Lombardi Trophy with head coach Tom Coughlin after defeating the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium on February 5, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Twitter users fired off 12,233 tweets per second at the end of the Super Bowl, smashing the previous record for a sports event, Twitter said.

Madonna's half-time performance during the New York Giants 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots saw Twitter users sending off 10,245 tweets per second at its peak, the San Francisco-based short-messaging service said.

The 12,233 tweets per second at the end of Super Bowl 46 topped the previous record for a sporting event -- the 7,196 tweets per second at the final whistle of Japan's defeat of the United States in the women's World Cup final in July.

The all-time record for tweets per second -- 25,088 -- was set in December last year with the screening in Japan of Hayao Miyazaki's "Castle in the Sky."

Other recent notable events include the nearly 9,000 tweets per second sent in August following Beyonce's pregnancy announcement at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Twitter's more than 100 million users sent more than 60 billion tweets last year.
