In a challenge to instant video leader Netflix, telecom giant Verizon and rental group Redbox have launched a streaming video service for US customers.

The service was open to the public Friday after several weeks in testing.
"Redbox Instant by Verizon" was announced in February 2012, aiming to allow customers to get streaming video in addition to rentals at the 36,000 Redbox kiosks around the United States.
The streaming service is similar to that of Netflix, and allows consumers to watch on a television, computer, tablet or other handheld device. It will cost $8 a month, comparable to the price of Netflix streaming.
"Disc + digital for everyone! We're now open to the public," the company said in a tweet Thursday. The service is also available through the Microsoft Xbox gaming console.
Netflix claims to be the world's leading Internet television network with more than 33 million members in 40 countries.
