Samsung unveils 3D arsenal and eyes market leadership

Sasiwimon Boonruang reports from Singapore as the electronics giant unveils an exciting range of major developments in the home 3D and digital media industries which look set to increase convergence

Life in the digital era looks set to become easier than ever with the increasing convergence of media devices in the home such as TVs, PCs, digital video recorders, digital cameras, mobile phones, laptops and portable music players.

HD 3D LED TVs use a full-colour spectrum for an immersive viewing experience.

Samsung Electronics unveiled a broad portfolio to underscore its ideology of inspiring new dimensions of experience.

At Samsung's recent South East Asia & Oceania Forum, the company unveiled its latest cutting edge technologies, applications and connectivity.

Samsung claims to be the first company in the world to offer total 3D solutions based on its new home entertainment innovations.

According to Samsung Electronics president of Visual Display Business Boo-Keun Yoon, the success of recent 3D movie titles is building anticipation from people who want to enjoy the richness of 3D content in the comfort of their living rooms.

"Being the first to market with the best integrated technologies and approaches, Samsung is confident this is the best opportunity to capitalise on market anticipation," he said.

The company announced the widest range of options in 3D home entertainment ever with a full line up of 3D LED, LCD and plasma TVs, Blu-ray players and home theatre systems and 3D glasses, plus a range of and 3D content to fuel adoption of the hardware.

The e-book E60 comes with touchscreen and the power consumption is lower than other portable display devices because it’s not backlit. Four hours of charging prepares the battery for up to one week of use.

The world's widest 3D LED TV, the 55-inch 9000 series, plus the LED 80000, LED 7000 and LCD 750 HDTV, will be rolled out in Thailand by the second quarter of this year.

The LED 9000 series comes with a Wi-Fi-enabled touchscreen remote control that lets users to watch television on it at the same time as the actual TV displays another source.

The TV can also be stream AV content from a computer to the remote's display if the two are linked.

Samsung has also joined forces with DreamWorks Animation and Technicolor to accelerate the worldwide deployment of in-home 3D to mainstream consumers. The solution includes a broad line-up of 3D-capable HDTVs from Samsung, its new 3D Blu-ray disc player, and an exclusive promotion that includes a feature-length, 3D Blu-ray version of DreamWorks Animation's 2009 release, Monsters vs. Aliens.

All of the 3D models will feature a built-in Ethernet connection, wireless-ready capabilities, and Internet@TV, which provides access to the world's first HDTV-based application store, Samsung Apps.

Several new content providers will deliver content and applications to the Samsung Apps store, including online video site Dailymotion, Google's Picasa web album, online gaming service Playjam and the History Channel.

The upgraded Internet TV feature includes Samsung Apps and consumers can easily navigate between content and applications from services.

"2010 is the transformative year of Samsung," said Irene Ng, strategic marketing director, Samsung Singapore, who noted that every single high-end Samsung device will support 3D technology.

All the new products have been developed to meet Samsung DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standard to meet the demands of a digital lifestyle. Consumers will enjoy the freedom to access, play and share their digital content, favourite movies, music and photos at home and on the go, as all the media devices are able to connect and communicate with each other and share digital media.

Samsung expects to increase its LED TV shipments from 10 million units to 35 million globally this year. In Thailand, the company targets more than 60 percent growth in LCD and LED TVs business, according to Thai Samsung Electronics group leader of Corporate Marketing Manatase Annawat.

He noted that for those who want to add the 3D to their regular TV viewing, Samsung has equipped its 3D processor with auto-conversion technology that renders 2D content to 3D in real time.

The company, meanwhile, has created a new category of digital camera by bridging the gap between compact and DSLR models.

3D active glasses are likely to become popular accessories.

Its new NX10 digital camera boasts a compact, sleek and lightweight design with a mirrorless interchangeable lens that ensures users' demand for high picture quality and portable design are fulfilled.

The NX10 boasts three lenses to offer users a specific range of quality of shots and the company plans to introduce eight-lens models within this year.

As the first in the industry to introduce this new generation of camera, Samsung is aiming for its hybrid camera to become the leading brand, with a target to deliver some 1.5 million units by the end of this year and 15 million by 2015.

Samsung has also entered the e-book market with the launch of two models, with 10- and six-inch displays, both with touchscreens.

Philip Newton, Samsung Australia director of IT Business, noted that Samsung's products will not only play the role of the traditional e-book, but will also focus on functionality of writing, connectivity and information-sharing.

The E60 and E100 support handwriting directly onto the display, allowing users to annotate their reading selections, calendars and memo notes with a built-in EMR stylus pen.

The new category digital camera, NX10, which Samsung claims is the first of its kind in the world, is bridging the gap between compact and DSLR models.

The e-books are equipped with wireless connectivity, allowing users to download content such as books and newspapers from a server wirelessly and to share certain content with other devices.

The company is now in discussions with content providers and publishers. In Australia, Newton said, Samsung has worked with mobile operator Vodafone to market e-books.

At the exhibition, the e-book reader was one of several devices that could connects with the 650TS interactive whiteboard, Samsung's first large-format display with a full HD touch screen.

The E-board is designed for education and training use, providing drag-and-drop access to its built-in content library, full multimedia support and multi content screen formats.

Manatase said the Samsung e-book is just at the introduction stage in Thailand, adding that it will take a year or so before the market the technology becomes more accepted.At the beginning of this year, Samsung merged its PC and printer divisions, which the company anticipates will have a significant strategic business impact.

The Samsung N210 netbook features a new "inside pattern" design ID while also possessing up to 12 hours of battery power. The NB30 possesses protective physical features for those with a more rugged lifestyle, while the P Series of notebooks targets business users with a technology arsenal that include Intel's Calpella platform, a 16:9 LED Backlit LCD and an nVidia graphics processor.

Samsung has set a goal to ensure all of its products exceed Good Eco-Product criteria by 2013.

This will include introducing eco-friendly evaluation of products at the R&D stage, enhancing energy efficiency, and increasing the use of recyclable and eco-friendly materials.

Digital living can go perfectly hand-in-hand with environmental responsibility once the products have been developed along eco-friendly lines.
