Summer is the perfect time to go on a vacation. The kids (should that be a consideration) have an extended break from school and there are lots of public holidays dispersed over the next few months. Here are a few tips to ensure you have a perfect getaway plus reminders about certain necessities you might need to shop for before embarking on your journey _ whether you're holidaying in-country or are all set to jet off to some exotic locale.

PLAN AHEAD

It's crucial to carefully map out your trip in advance in order to cover all possible eventualities. Book plane/rail/boat tickets, make hotel/guesthouse reservations and do some research on your destination(s). While totally winging it could bring about that Spontaneous Trip of a Lifetime you've always craved, it could just as easily result in disaster. Remember that this is one of the most popular times of the year to go on holiday so there are likely to be hundreds, if not thousands, of other people competing with you for the exact same plane seats, hotel beds, etc.

BE PREPARED

Being aware of the climatic conditions that can be expected at your destination _ and checking out weather forecasts prior to departure _ will make it easier to decide the appropriate kind of clothes to pack and in what quantity. Bring along a disposable raincoat or a foldable umbrella for protection against unseasonable showers.

SAFETY FIRST

Always take along a small first-aid kit which, at the minimum, should contain plasters to dress cuts or wounds, pain-relief pills plus medication to treat allergies, nausea and diarrhoea. You never know what's going to happen so it's best to be prepared for all kinds of situations.

PACK THE ESSENTIALS

Compile a list of what you need to bring with you, starting with headwear and working downwards. To help you stay cool, bring light-coloured or brightly coloured clothes instead of dark/sober-hued garments which tend to absorb more sunlight. To maximise space in your suitcases, roll clothes up instead of folding them flat; this also has the advantage of minimising unsightly creases. If you expect to be going out for a romantic dinner or to be mixing with well-dressed company, you may want to pack a good outfit or two and some respectable footwear into the bargain.

RECHECK

Photographs can help you relive a memorable trip many years later, so don't forget to bring along a camera plus chargers for that and your mobile phone. Check your wallet/handbag/purse just before you leave home to make sure you have your passport, plane ticket(s) and any information you'll need to refer to during the trip. Add essential contact and emergency numbers to your mobile phone before setting out on your journey.

Careful preparation is just a way of ensuring that things go smoothly and nasty surprises are avoided, but the key to a happy trip is spending quality time with your loved one(s)/family members/friends. So make the most of your experiences and have a great time!
