Available on PC since November 2012, the free-to-play, massively multiplayer sci-fi shooter "PlanetSide 2" will be rolling out on PlayStation 4, as proclaimed by the game's E3 2013 trailer.
Players pick a faction, load up on a range of weaponry and equipment, and jump into an off-world battlefield that offers them skirmishes on foot, from inside ground vehicles, and in the air.
Alongside "DC Universe Online," another game developed by Sony Online Entertainment, "Planetside 2" will escape the PS4 requirement that players need to have an active PlayStation Plus membership in order to get online with their chums.
And like Microsoft, the PlayStation destination for "PlanetSide 2" means Sony can boast of more than one attractive sci-fi shooter on its upcoming console.
Where Microsoft has a deal for "Titanfall" and is teasing a new "Halo," Sony has been busily inviting ex-"Halo" developer Bungie to associate "Destiny" with the PlayStation brand even though, like "Titanfall," the title is likely to appear on both new consoles and PC as well.
But although "PlanetSide 2" is an opportunity to wow potential customers with the prospect of huge multiplayer battles, the game was not part of Sony's June 10 stage show, tempering expectations for its eventual launch, as of yet undated.
"It's unlikely on Planetside 2 that PS4 and PC players will [play together]," noted SOE President John Smedley (@j_smedley) -- a merger would hand the advantage to PC players with faster mouse-based control. Despite that, "the work that we are doing for Planetside 2 on PS4 is going to yield a faster PC version."
