'Cloudberry Kingdom' leads charge for PSN Play 2013

Four games feature in a July to August bulk buy special for the PlayStation 3, with exciting, randomly generated "Cloudberry Kingdom" helping spearhead the campaign.

Cloudberry Kingdom: did things just get a little hectic?

"Cloudberry Kingdom" isn't a new region in "My Little Pony," it's a side-scrolling video game made by two childhood friends who wanted to make a Mario game without Mario's major drawback -- the fact that it ends.

And if its name makes you think that "Cloudberry Kingdom" is a game for sissies, you'd be partially right. You can play the game on an Easy setting.

But the next difficulty up is Unpleasant. After that, Abusive. Then Hardcore. Finally, Masochistic. That means balls on chains, lasers, fireball chains, spikes, and fireballs on chains. Oh, and you can't really see what you're doing. Kind of like "Super Meat Boy" with added evilness, silliness, and a "Cyanide & Happiness" art style.

It stars a middle-aged hero called Bob -- voiced by Kevin Sorbo of "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys" --  who's tired of a life spent rescuing princesses, a princess voiced by Kevin Sorbo's wife Sam Sorbo ("Hercules," "Chicago Hope," "Andromeda"), and the Lord of Evil from "Adventure Time," Martin Olson, as King Kobbler.

The whole game is randomly generated, while remaining theoretically beatable, so you never know what you're going to get each time; you can also set your own criteria for new levels and share both those and the best random ones as well, helping "Cloudberry Kingdom" become "Mario Infinite."

Joining "Cloudberry Kingdom" in PSN Play 2013 are "Stealth Inc. - A Clone in the Dark" (available on Windows, Mac and Linux as "Stealth Bastard Deluxe"), co-operative puzzle game and IndieCade finalist "ibb & obb," which fits in nicely with PlayStation's art-game aesthetic, and a remastered version of the video game starring everybody's favorite 1990s cartoon theme tune earworm, "DuckTales."

Each will go for $9.99 on the North American PlayStation Store, save for "DuckTales," which is a $15 gig.

Buying all four leads to $10 PSN Store credit, three nets $6, and two leads to a $3 deposit. In addition, there'll be 20% off pre-orders for PlayStation Plus members that are happy to take the plunge based on preview buzz.
