Las Vegas - Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer has announced that a test version of the US software titan's Windows 7 operating system will be available worldwide on Friday.

"We are on track to deliver the best version of Windows ever," Ballmer said while making an opening keynote speech at a premier Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

"We are putting in all the right ingredients: simplicity, reliability and speed."

Developers and Microsoft partner companies can begin testing Windows 7 immediately, Ballmer said.

"On Friday we will make the beta available worldwide so users can come online and try Windows 7 at home. I encourage you all to go out and download it."

The public download will reported be available on Friday US time, which could be Saturday in Thailand at www.microsoft.com/windows7/

The eagerly-anticipated successor to Microsoft's Vista operating system will streamline everyday tasks, cut boot-up times, extend battery life and make it simple to weave "smart" devices into home networks, according to Microsoft.

Ballmer said that the Windows software at the heart of Microsoft's empire is being "transformed" into a program that connects networks of computers, mobile telephones and applications hosted as online services.

A "Play-to" feature in Windows 7 enables easy streaming of music, video and digital photos in home computer networks, according to Microsoft.

Media Player and Media Center programs in Windows 7 support more media formats for playing video, music and other digital content and will synch to a wider array of devices, according to Microsoft.

Windows 7 software is tailored to handle touch screen controls coming into vogue as replacements for the computer mouse.

Ballmer also used the keynote stage to reveal that Microsoft has struck new partnerships with US telecom firm Verizon and hot online social-networking service Facebook.

Facebook members can link their profiles to Windows Live accounts and automatically share photos, video and other content they post at Facebook.

"You can now connect Facebook with Windows Live," Ballmer said. "Facebook content can be published to Windows Live."

Microsoft last year paid 240 million dollars for a 1.6 percent stake in Facebook.

Verizon is using Microsoft Live Search to handle Internet searches for its mobile telephone service users in the United States.

Ballmer said a Windows Live Essentials free suite of software for email, instant messaging, and photo sharing is available and is even being pre-installed on personal computers made by Dell.

This was Ballmer's first time filling the shoes of recently-retired Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, whose CES opening keynotes had become a tradition.

Ballmer told consumer electronics industry insiders filling the audience that these brutal economic times hold opportunity for technology firms that position themselves for an inevitable recovery.

"No matter how long this recession lasts I believe there is no turning back from the technical world," said Ballmer, adding that Microsoft plans to continue investing heavily in research.

"At the end of the day, it is the power of ideas and innovation that drive us forward regardless of economic environment. The opportunity to change lives with technology is more powerful than ever before."

Ballmer sees special opportunity in the convergence of "the three screens people use every day -- personal computer, mobile telephone and television."

Poor Paul Birt and Guyver, but if you had followed the IT news a little better, e.g. read the Database on Wednesdays, than this earlier release of Window's 7 is not a surprise at all. Windows indeed has admitted some time back that Vista is not a success and they will have tought that their future on the leading O.S. market can only be saved by releasing an new proper working system. You could have prevented to install the "..." Vista on your system and saved some Bahts for future Windows 7 purchase.

What do expect Microsoft to announce?

"Well folks, this year Microsoft would like to introduce another wonderfully crafted piece of crap!"

This may be the truth, but they're in business to make money, not to be virtuous. Besides, Microsoft employs thousands and that is not bad in itself.

    Read carefully, 'Buyer beware, always'.

I have never seen a single consumer comment that praises the vurtues of Window's Vista program. I have seen many comments that critize it. Two items in particular that influenced me NOT to buy a new laptop with the Vista OS were reviews pointing out Vista's snail pace speed and freeze up issues associated with the Norton Anti-Virus software.

Every OS Window's has produced in the past has failed miserable to address the security (actually , the lack of security) problems. No sooner does a new OS replace an older version than we find out it's full of flaws that allow hackers to exploit and manipulate our files. This poor QC and product testing policy only proves to me that Microsoft values profit much more than it values consumer protection. I might add that consumer in this instance includes an enormous list of major financial institutions, government social data bases (Social Security Administration, Veteran's Administration and national security data bases such as military personnel and weapons info, ect. ect. I see nothing mentioned in the above announcement by Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer about improved security.

Now, I'm no computer geek, so I'd like to ask someone who is a question. Do you trust Microsoft?

Most corporations never accepted Vista. MS tried a few marketing techniques to convince the public Vista is good. It's not because there is too much overhead. People who have it do so because it came installed on their PC. Even my non-technical masseuse asked me to remove Vista from her laptop and install XP. Her laptop only had 1 Gig of memory. I think MS has acknowledged Vista stinks and is moving ahead with Windows 7.

I have also moved to Vista. Is this microsofts way of saying they have no faith in their product by looking to replace it whilst most people are still using XP?
