All-in-one program suites have advantages, and users like them - witness the office suites and the almost unexplainable popularity of the Norton and Symantec security programs which sometimes protect your computer.

The Comodo group, which makes a terrific firewall, also has a combined security suite which will look after all the attempts at malicious attacks on the host computer—for free.

Comodo Internet Security is a free (and better) option to these last two. Like all suites, the main feature is that once you download and install it, Comodo does everything you want for computer security.

There's a certain airline-pilot mystique to this. "Daddy is going to take me flying," said comedian Bob Newhardt.

You trust that person in the cockpit and, by extension, that program that claims to be protecting you from all the bad people. "Mommy, make them stop hurting me," and Comodo does.

Well, that's the claim.

This is a really big download. But when you install it, you're finished with security, except for downloading updated information, which Comodo modules will handle automatically.

You get a firewall - Comodo Firewall has been praised in several columns in Post Database - and this blocks known and suspected bad guys trying to worm their way into your PC.

You get anti-virus, anti-malware, system monitoring, automatic cleaning of polluted files, and so on.

As you download files, they are scanned in real time, and you don't see this unless there's a problem.

Every so often, when you're not using the computer intensively, the program does a disk scan.

Like all suites, the program is complex but pretty simple to use. It opens with a summary page that shows you what's currently happening in three areas: your computer in general; your Internet connection if any, and the current status of your security. It then offers to let you take a closer look at various security sections, including anti-virus, the Internet, real-time protection and, well, miscellaneous. Again, each of these sections is fairly easy, and comes with help to get you over any speed bumps.
