Korat shooting victims receive more compensation

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: Victims of the Feb 8-9 mass shooting received additional compensation from public donations in a ceremony on Wednesday.

The ceremony was chaired by Wichian Chantaranothai, the provincial governor.

Mr Wichian said the total amount donated by people across the country was 89,936,633.43 baht. The entire sum has now been paid out.

The families of 27 people who lost their lives in the shooting have received a total of 2,437,653 baht each; three victims who were seriously injured with permanent disability 3.5 million baht each; three injured with permanent disability 3 million baht each; one injured with moderate disability 3 million baht; 17 seriously injured 400,000 baht each; 16 moderately injured 200,000 baht each; and 31 with minor injuries 20,000 baht each.

Thirty people, including the shooter, were killed and 58 were reported injured in the shooting rampage on Feb 8-9. However, it appeared that another 11 people with minor injuries had since come forward to claim compensation. 

During the ceremony, gifts from Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn were also given to relatives of those killed and injured.

Earlier on Wednesday, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over another ceremony to hand over money under the law on compensation for damaged parties in criminal cases. 

During that ceremony, the families of 27 killed were paid 1 million baht each; those seriously injured 200,000 baht each, and those less seriously injured 100,000 baht each.
