Ranger shot dead in Yala

A security volunteer was shot and killed while reading the Quran at his father's grave in Yala.

Than To police were informed yesterday about the shooting in which Ruslee Daleng, a 43-year-old ranger volunteer, was shot in the head at a Muslim graveyard in tambon Than To of Yala's Than To district.

Ruslee was on leave visiting his sick father, who died on Sunday. He attended his father's funeral. Ruslee then went to a religious service at the graveyard yesterday where his father is buried, and was shot later in the morning.

Police found a 9-milimetre cartridge. They are hunting for the killer and investigating to find out if the murder was connected to the ongoing conflict in the deep South, or a personal matter.

Meanwhile, local authorities in the southern region, including the Internal Security Operation Command (Isoc) Region 4 and the Provincial Police Region 9, have arrested 10 drug dealers from four drug networks and seized a total of 600 kilogrammes of meth pills and six firearms worth almost four million baht.

The police stressed the need for strict preventive measures against drugs and weapons in the region, especially during the Hari Raya Aidilfitri religious holiday when smuggling is rife.
