More than 130 subjects taught in Thai universities have been ranked in the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject, up from 110 subjects last year.
Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi said yesterday that Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a London-based organisation that ranks universities worldwide, has published the QS World University Rankings by Subject in which 134 subjects taught in many Thai universities are included.
The number is more than the 110 subjects included in last year's rankings, with one of the highest-ranked institutions for this year being Kasetsart University, which was ranked 62nd in the field of Agriculture & Forestry, according to Ms Supamas.
She said several other Thai universities are ranked among the top 100 in several fields.
They include Chulalongkorn University, which is ranked among the top 100 in the fields of Mineral & Mining Engineering, Performing Arts, Petroleum Engineering, Dentistry and Development Studies, and Mahidol University, which is in the top 100 for Development Studies, said Ms Supamas.
"As you can see, Thai university subjects have increased overall in the world rankings. For example, 39 Chulalongkorn University subjects ranked in 2023 increased to 43 subjects in 2024, Mahidol University's 18 subjects in 2023 rose to 22 in 2024, while Chiang Mai University's 12 subjects rose to 19 and Kasetsart University went from nine in 2023 to 13 in 2024," she said.
According to Ms Supamas, the QS World University Rankings by Subject is based on criteria like sustainability, employment and international research partnerships, which reflect the quality of research studies and academic reputations of Thai universities on the global stage.
She said the rise in the number of ranked subjects is proof that Thai universities are constantly improving.
