The Riva Surya Bangkok retains the history of Chao Phraya River boats in a newly opened modern hotel. Previously it has been a home, apartment complex, and now is a 68-room boutique hotel. Officially opening just over two weeks ago, the hotel is located in Bangkok's preserved Rattanakosin Island and is practically right beside the Phra Athit Pier. The decor and architecture is a mix of new and old. It has been influenced by elements of Tropical Colonial design and Michael Thonet, an Austrian designer from the late 19th century. The design also takes inspiration from the Royal Barge Processions that takes place on the river on special occasions. The historical vision is complemented by modern touches like iPod docks and extremely comfortable beds. The hotel is set up nicely for an in-city holiday for locals or a portal to the past for tourists.
