Step inside the Sofitel Sukhumvit, between sois 13 and 15, and zoom right on up to the 32nd floor.

As the name suggests, step out of the elevator and it feels like you're setting foot into an exclusive private penthouse apartment, in Paris, but with an extraordinary view of Bangkok, at L'Appart.

Picture a stylish setting, lavish sofas, eclectic design pieces, bookcase lined walls, L'Appart combines traditional luxury with contemporary chic, as a Champagne bar and gourmet restaurant, inspired in detail, by 19th century Paris influential architect Baron Haussmann. Refinement meets comfort, whether just for drinks or dinner. On the one side, the bar leads out onto a terrace that wraps around a significant portion of the building, with enviable panoramic views, including the ideal spot to watch the sun set over the city.

Trace your steps back inside from whence you came and tour around the rest of this impressive pad. On the other side of the elevators is the enigmatic ambience of the open show kitchen, where guests can watch the chefs hard at their craft.

An intimate private dining room to the left, and a larger private entertaining space to the right, follow this path through to other perfectly positioned seating options, with glittering outlooks onto Bangkok's night lights. This is a setting idyllic for romance for two, as well as for sophisticated soire{aac}es and special occasion gatherings.

With the festive season fast approaching, Chef de Cuisine, Jeremy Tourret, has already conceived both Christmas and New Year set menus, aimed to impress and tantalise the palette. Imagine clinking glasses with your loved one or friends, as fireworks whizz and burst over the night's sky and one of Bangkok's new best kept secrets is out!

Chef Jeremy's mantra is to respect tradition, take the finest ingredients and delight his diners. He earned his stripes working under two and three Michelin-star chefs. He applies a contemporary take on traditional French techniques, with international flavours, for stunningly presented plates. To sample this mixture of his flavours on the regular menu, try half a dozen imported French oysters Fine de Claire No.3, with a spicy Thai dressing and a squeeze of lemon, served with discs of warm white toast (B900++).

For his Christmas Eve menu at L'Appart, Chef Jeremy has prepared a six-stage culinary exploration. Starting with a light amuse-bouche, a king crab salad comes with crunchy celery and green apple, with a very light madras curry flavouring. A marble foie gras terrine is a picture on a dish, covered in a glossy port wine jelly, with fruit confit and crispy gingerbread, hitting a Christmas note. The main seafood course is a sole ballotine, with a lemon confit beurre blanc, on a bed of black ink risotto, accompanied by virgine sauce. As a palette cleanser, a Champagne granite is married with a grapefruit foam. Next, a rich poultry main is served up with bacon-laced roasted turkey, pumpkin mousseline and glazed chestnuts. The final piece of artwork is a Christmas log, with red berries, chocolate and pistachio ice cream.

Toast to happiness in gourmet style, with L'Appart's New Year's Eve dining experience. Dine indoors for B6,500++, or on the terrace, up close with the city lights and fireworks for B8,500++ (both prices are included half a bottle of Champagne per diner).

The food parade begins with an amuse bouche of sea oursin custard and caviar, followed by pan-fried foie gras, red berries and homemade brioche. The soup course ensues with a poultry veloute{aac} and frog legs. A monkfish roll wrapped in pancetta appears next, with a crayfish and lobster bisque, served on a porcini fricassee. To refresh the palatte before the richest dish of all, guests will be served a green apple granite with a spiced cloud. Prepped and cleansed, the palette will be treated to roasted wood pigeon, foie gras and black truffle, with a celeriac mousseline and glazed salsify. Dessert decadence comes in the form of a chocolate cremeux, feuillantine, strawberries and a tonka bean sorbet.

It is recommended that bookings are made as early as possible to secure your favourite spot, so it would definitely be worth popping over for a drink at the bar or on the terrace, as a recon trip, to get a feel for the festivities ahead of the game. For a real treat, make it a Tuesday evening and guests are in for a surprise. Casually seated, having a drink and a chat, it appears that random guests suddenly stand up and start wondering about, dressed in formal evening wear Then, they sing This quintet of opera singers is 'Fivera', and they impress with performances of classic opera favourites, not to be missed, between 7.30pm and 9.30pm. Before this, take a spot on the terrace to enjoy the daily happy hours from 5.00pm to 7.00pm and guests will certainly be in the mood to make a night of it, after a hard day in the office.

L'Appart presents guests with unique entertainment throughout the month, which means it is a good idea to check back regularly on the sofitel.com website. L'Appart's rooftop bar and restaurant open every evening: the bar runs from 5.00pm to 1.00am; dinner is served from 7.00pm to 10.30pm; while tapas are served from 5.00pm to midnight.
