Constructed before the Ayutthaya period, this temple is Buddhist, but also has a Chinese character. There are numerous shrines around the temple that are Chinese shrines, but no one knows exactly the history behind these shrines, nor who built the original temple. The viharn contains the oldest, and largest Buddha in Ayuthaya, the Phra Chao Phananchoeng. It is 14.25 metres wide and 19 metres high, made of mortar, primed with black lacquer and covered with gold leaf. The shape of face and broad facial features confirm that this Buddha image is of the period of second generation U Thong style Buddha images.
