Jim Thompson was an American serviceman attached to the O.S.S. who settled in Thailand after World War II to revitalise the craft of handwoven silk and the silk production industry in Thailand. His house comprises six teakwood buildings which were moved to Bangkok from various parts of the country, including one from Ayutthaya, in 1959. The fine art collection generated much interest. Thompson opened his house to the public and gave proceeds to trusts and charities dedicated to preserving Thai design, art and culture. Thompson suddenly disappeared in 1967 in Malaysia. His disappearance remains a mystery to this day.
