Phu Soi Dao National Park, Uttaradit
The rainy season is generally not the best time of year to visit destinations in this part of the world. But Phu Soi Dao is a notable exception.
That's because when the monsoon is at its height this lush mountaintop meadow dotted with pine trees becomes a riot of colour when the charming ngon nak (Murdannia giganteum) and many other species of wild flowering plants put forth their blossoms.
It's a 6.5km hike to this site which is 1,633m above sea level. Porters are available at the foot of the mountain.
- How to get there
Phu Soi Dao straddles the Thai-Laotian border in Nam Pat district. It can be reached via Uttaradit to the west or Phitsanulok to the south. Those with no transportation of their own should go for the latter option: Take a local bus from Phitsanulok town to Chat Trakan from where a shuttle service leaves for the park daily at 9am.
- Food and accommodation
The national park has a few houses for rent near its headquarters, but on the mountaintop itself camping is your only option. Don't forget that you'll need to bring along cooking gear as well as your own supply of food.
