Doi Suthep-Pui used to be known as Doi Oi Chang. Doi Suthep was named after a hermit, Phra Ruesi Vasuthep (Rishi Vasudev in Sanskrit) who lived in this forest many ages ago. In 1973, the Royal Forestry Department decided that Doi Suthep and 13 other forest areas in the country should be conserved as national parks. Eventually, areas occupied by villagers were excluded in the decree. In 1981, it became the 24th national park of Thailand, encompassing a total area of 161.06 square kilometres. The following year, an additional 100 sqkm was annexed to the park, bringing the total area to 261.06 square kilometres.
