The Ubolratana Dam was constructed in the early 1960s and has since then been supplying the northeastern region of Thailand with electricity. Behind the dam, a huge reservoir provides not only water, but also many other activities. Along the reservoir a number of beaches can be found, and one of them is Hat Sawan, a favourite with local tourists. The beach covers an area of nearly 30 acres, and is the centre of water-related activities, including fishing, swimming, etc. Nature trails also lead away from the beach for those who want to take a hike.
